The Big Move: Our New Family Room
The big move!! You might not know this but over the summer we built a house. We made the long trek to literally down the street in our own neighborhood and built it from the ground up being able to put our own personal touch on every element. While we moved back in mid-November, it's been a whirlwind of unpacking, setting up 2016 and the holiday rush. Fortunately January has come and with it our sofa that took almost as long to build and deliver as the entire house did. The majority of the house isn't finished, I believe in taking your time and doing it right versus rushing through with a half-cocked plan in certain situations so it's been a slow process getting everything together. However, since we have most of the family room together I figured I would share the space and show you why I never ever want to get up off the sofa ever again in my life.
Two of my favorite things about our new family room are the cross beamed ceilings and the wood-burning fireplace. In our county new builds aren't actually allowed real wood fireplaces but because of a little loophole between the date our community was built and the new codes we were able to get one! Nothing is better than sitting next to a crackling fire on a freezing cold day. Since northern Virginia has turned into the arctic tundra, that's where you'll find me most nights.
The other night we finally hung curtains. Although we still have to work on the wall the tv is on, it's amazing how much coziness curtains can add to a room. I still might have to take them off and iron them but I'm holding out in hopes that gravity does my job for me first.
The other day I asked Shaun what he thought of the clock above the fireplace and he said he didn't like it. I disagreed and he asked why I wanted his opinion if I was planning on leaving it anyway. I told him I just wanted confirmation of what I was already going to do...does anyone else do this with their spouse?
Originally when we got our coffee table we didn't have anything else in the room (sofa, tv, media center) and it looked HUGE. It measures 4 ft x 5 ft and I sent Shaun a picture of it with a Bear for scale. Now that we have filled up the room a little more it fits, but if we ever run out of guest rooms I can always throw a mattress on top of it for guests!
This faux fur blanket was a point of much contention between us when we ordered the sofa. It's the softest, warmest thing in the entire world and I didn't bring it into the store when we were looking at the sofa eventually when we picked up the curtains we snagged the blanket too and I immediately turn into a cat and curl up into a ball with it as soon as I see it.
I plan on eventually changing out the a-frame bookshelf that's behind the sofa now and possibly doing some built-ins or artwork around the tv wall. But for now it's a cozy respite from the January cold.
Thanks for checking out the space! What are your thoughts on the clock? Should he migrate or stay put?
